The Bullet is Back: Breitling Chronomat Collection
Just in time for Father’s day the iconic Chronomat collection from Breitling received a facelift. If your father is a watch lover he will remember the early days of Chronomat from the mid to late 1980’s, and the latest version may look familiar. One of the biggest reasons for this collections popularity was the multitude of choices that allowed the owner to customize it to their taste. In addition was its versatility; it was a watch that can be worn with a suit, or at the beach. I would say that this was the collection that vaulted Breitling into the luxury watch conversation with the best brands on the planet.
There is so much to love about the most recent iteration. Let’s start with the size; at 42mm it’s perfect for today’s tastes. In fact, these days we see both gentlemen and ladies wearing watches at 42mm.
Chronomat’s beauty is not just about the outside, it is fit with Breitling’s in house B01 movement on the inside. This beautifully finished and extremely accurate COSC certified movement is housed in a 200m water resistant case and is visible through an exhibition caseback. It is available, of course, with a black, silver or Blue dial, but Breitling has added a very well done salmon color to its line-up.
Like Chronomat of the past, the current collection is available in Stainless steel, an amazing full 18kt gold option or options with either a full gold bezel and center links on the bracelet, or just a touch of gold on the rider tabs, crown and pushers.
Last but absolutely not least is the re-introduction of the Rouleaux bracelet, which was nicknamed by collectors as the “Bullet Bracelet”. It’s an extremely comfortable bracelet that seamlessly integrates with the case, and is unique to Breitling. This bracelet is the icing on the cake as far as I’m concerned. The previous several versions of Chronomat were on the highly polished and popular Pilot Bracelet, but this is the design element that completes the vintage inspired look that made this watch so popular in the 1980’s.
